元来、日本の根源的な「色」は、赤、青、白、玄の四色である。日本語ではこれら４つはそれだけで色の状態を表せる。即ち「赤い」「青い」「白い」「黒い」。この他の色は概ね同じように用いる場合「色」という言葉が必要になる（例：黄色い、茶色い）か、単純に「～い」で表せない。（例：緑、紫）
